Our neighbor across the street is a nice retired Brittish man who, from time to time, likes to chat with us from across the street. He never actually comes over, rather we have a friendly shouting conversation as cars traverse between us. The other day I was heading out to run some errands and he was out on his grill. I waved to him which initiated the following conversation. (Imagine a thick Brittish accent and loud, elevated voices as other neighbors are out doing yardwork and cars pass by.)
Bruce: "Hello! You had a baby, eh? What was it, boy or girl?"
Me: "It was a girl. She is 10 weeks old now."
Bruce: "Oh, a little girl! What is her name?"
Me: "Mayzie."
Bruce: "Come again?" Puts hand up to ear to signal repetition.
Me: (louder) "MAYZIE!"
Bruce: "Oh, Macie. How pretty!" Whatever. Not worth yelling again.
And then the kicker...
Bruce: "Are you bottle or breast feeding?"
Um, what is the best way to go about this???
Me: Glancing around to check for eavesdroppers. "Breast." Not too loud now.
Bruce: "Come again?" Puts hand to ear.
Me: red in the face, "BREAST!" A little louder than I anticipated.
The rest of the conversation is a muddled cloud in my head, something about it "being the best for the baby, blah, blah, blah..."
Now the whole block knows I am breastfeeding, and that little toddler next door has to go ask his mother what a breast is.

I think that is one of my favorite stories ever! I'm so glad that you had that opportunity to share with the world the wonders of motherhood! I can't wait to see Mayzie in August, and you too:) I'm sure you'll be really busy, but I'm going to drop by for sure!

Ha ha! That story made my day. I can't imagine anyone being so interested in whether you are bottle or breast feeding who won't even come over to talk to you face to face. I need more pictures of my darling Mayzie! Love you guys.
